The Incubator

Incubadora de empresas de desarrollo y producción de accesorios para la industria del entretenimiento (videoconsolas, ordenadores, multimedia, música, cine en casa, etc) en uno de los emplazamiento de Manhattan en los que se ha trabajado durante el curso.

Criterios:
- máxima densidad.
- habrá el mayor numero posible de “nidos”
- cada empresa dispondrá del espacio mínimo posible
- cada empresa tendrá tres campos: interacción (relación intensa con la ciudad, coolhunting, outlet, testing, promoción), producción (oficinas, ordenadores, estudios, montaje), logística (mercancías, almacén, empaquetado)

Documentos a entregar:
- diagrama indicando los elementos de programa y su relación tridimensional (como el del ejemplo que ilustra esta entrada)
- situación y emplazamiento
- estudio de un nido tipo
- estudio de accesos y relación con la ciudad
- axonometría general y/o maqueta
- plantas generales
- vista lejana y alzado general
- vista cercana desde escala humana
- estudio de cerramiento y detalle de alzado

Binnen/Buiten - en la calle como en casa

Os recuerdo que los talleres Holandeses del matadero se podían hacer como alternativa a alguna de las entregas que no hubierais hecho a satisfacción. Basta incorporar el trabajo al cuaderno A3 de resumen del curso.
Concretamente, el taller titulado: Diseño participativo para una sociedad multicultural: domesticar el espacio público para recrear la identidad colectiva, que se desarrollará los días 5, 6, 7 y 8 de junio es muy relevante para el trabajo del curso. Y lo presenta nada menos que Herman Hertzberger.
Sin embargo, por fechas, ya queda fuera de la entrega, y además os puede coincidir con exámenes, por lo que muchos no podréis aprovechar la oportunidad al completo.

Por otra parte, algunas personas tendrán que seguir trabajando para sacar el curso en lo que se llama convocatoria extraordinaria de Julio. El trabajo de el taller Hertzberger podrá formar parte de esa entrega extraordinaria.

Incluso, también aceptaré como parte de entrega un informe razonado e ilustrado (A3) sobre la conferencia inaugural de ese taller: Herman Hertzberger el Viernes 6 de junio, a las 19:30 en La Central de Diseño del Matadero.

La entrega del Ejercicio 4, que como recordaréis está prevista para la próxima semana, será el Jueves 8. Se considerarán entregados a tiempo los que estén en el aula antes de las 16:00.

Durante la clase, revisaremos los trabajos entregados y detallaremos el trabajo que viene a continuación, que, como sabéis, consiste en elaborar un cuaderno A3 con todos los trabajos del curso. Es una oportunidad para repensar algunas cosas, redibujar otras o rehacer algún documento.

Como aperitivo para ello, nada mejor que sumarnos el Viernes 9 a una jornada maratoniana de arquitectura emergente, revisando lo que hacen los estudios madrileños.

Esta jornada, conducida por Iñaki Ábalos (Abalos&Herreros) en la Sala Ramón Gómez de la Serna del Círculo de Bellas Artes, ocupará todo el viernes 9 desde las 12:00, según el siguiente programa:
(yo estoy por la mañana, que no interfiere con la clase, pero en realidad lo mejor es que nos vayamos todos para allá, no?)

Tras realizar una intensa búsqueda por la red y diferentes páginas con planos, no he encontrado ningún plano en cad de Cabo Palos, pero si he recopilado una serie de planos del ayuntamiento de Cartagena que están bastante bien pero en pdf. Yo no se manejar ningún programa de paso de pdf a cad pero si alguno sabe pues que nos haga a todos un favorcito por favor!!!

We are going to use our aquired knoledge of building in extremely dense urban situations, to explore the posibilities of intensely urban coastal developement.
First, a few considerations (see links below, and debate today)
Second, a question: How many Benidorms would it have taken to concentrate all the newly built up areas in coastal Spain?

As I have explained today, you have a second chance to finish the 24Hrs/5Vice exercise, if you want to re-work it over Easter. You may hand it in again on the 27th of March.

The format for this second chance may be the same A1, or you may also reformat it to A3. As I also explained today, the last exercise of the year will be an A3 booklet with all the work you have done, where you may improve things. It will be a two-three week exercise, which is not a lot, so it may be a good idea to keep it in mind from now.

Travelling

Travelling is very important for the architect. Knowledge can be transmitted by a variety of means, but the real life experience of architecture is essential, in order to learn what there is beyond the image. Or perhaps not?
This week is the travelling week in our school. We propose an exercise that implies visiting at least 5 major works, 5 references for history.
Those already engaged in one of the organized trips will have sufficient material. Those who aren’t, can take advantage of the workshop hours to visit buildings and environments in the Region of Madrid.

The exercise is: register an experience of each visit, describing something that was important for you, but that you had not deduced from the graphic documentation you had previously studied. The challenge is indeed to obtain a legible registry of that experience. How to register the experience of a movement? Or a sound, a noise, a silence, a scent, a potential... The graphic system that you develop will be useful in the following exercise as a project tool.

Format: A3, landscape.
For each visited work, one page will summarize the documentation that you studied before the visit; the rest (minimum one by work) will be the registry of the experience. Complementarily, other formats may be used, but always in addition to the A3, and on a digital version which you may upload somewhere in the Internet. For this, you can add a comment right here with the link.
Deadline: Thursday 27^th March at 16:00.

Sueños de re-escala

Uno de los problemas más importantes de los espacios públicos es su dimensionado. En la isla de Manhattan aparece un enorme espacio público de 3.2km2 que sería Central Park, y que al caer en desuso, pasa de ser un lugar pintoresco y encantador a convertirse en un marcado foco de inseguridad para los ciudadanos.

Teniendo en cuenta el origen artificial del parque, que recrea un paisaje pintoresco totalmente virtual como respuesta a la marcada congestión que aparece sobre la isla y entendiendo que la solución más correcta no habría sido este único y sobredimensionado espacio, sino una sucesión de espacios de escala más humana, pero que es económicamente inviable expropiar suelo privado para generar nuevos espacios públicos, se plantea:

.- Intervenir sobre el espacio público ya existente, transformándolo y planteando nuevas situaciones que los enriquezcan y los acerquen más al hombre, por medio de una sucesión de unidades humanas de carácter público, privado, efímero o permanente, que dialoguen con el entorno o lo parasiten… pero que con la escala humana como nexo común, actúen como un re-escalador espacial que potencie este espacio.

.- Plantear células de vivienda de corta estancia, unidades de botellón, nichos de amor, módulos de lectura, zonas de fiesta ON/OFF, cápsulas de encuentro virtual, exposiciones virtuales, emuladores de sueños y parajes, “submarinos”, unidades de deporte, estaciones de cine, de sonido… Es decir, una sucesión de tipologías micro-espaciales, de espacios semiprivados, conquistables por los usuarios, bajo suelo público y que seguramente en alguna ocasión (especialmente los jóvenes) alguna vez soñaron, demostrando que serían perfectamente aplicables en la gran mayoría de espacios públicos que quedan inutilizados, o incluso inutilizables al caer la noche…

El objetivo es ver las distintas respuestas de los alumnos, proponiendo diferentes ensoñaciones, preocupaciones o incluso espacios picarescos, atrevidos y que rocen lo utópico, hasta generar un catálogo de nuevas tipologías que desemboquen en un nuevo “paisaje de deseo nocturno” un nuevo lugar sobre el que se recreen experiencias que nunca hubo y quizá nunca llegue a haber…

SU LUGAR IDEAL

Downtown es un espacio dominado por la actividad laboral. Cada día, millones de personas se trasladan desde sus residencias situadas en cualquier punto de nueva York, hasta su lugar de trabajo en downtown, perdiendo su tiempo en los traslados, dinero, y dejando a su familia durante toda la jornada.
No hay mucho espacio dedicado a la vivienda en downtown, la mayoría de edificios son oficinas, comercios…
La propuesta trata de trasladar a las familias de los trabajadores a downtown, creando un espacio ideal donde apenas se note que en realidad viven en un distrito financiero. Además la nueva aportación no deberá modificar el paisaje actual de la zona.
Hoy día existen diversidad de tipos de familia: pareja con o sin hijos, gente soltera que vive sola, familias numerosas…lo que crea una fuerte demanda de distintos tipos de vivienda.
Si unimos estos dos elementos, se crea una oportunidad de proyecto: crear espacios para distintas tipologías de familia en un lugar dominado por la actividad laboral, donde apenas existen zonas verdes, lugares aptos para niños y mayores etc, ni tampoco mucho espacio libre para construir.
No se trata de crear simples viviendas, deberá ser el lugar ideal para cada colectivo.

El programa concreto debe ser:

- Colegios
- Zonas deportivas
- Zonas verdes
- Residencia de ancianos
- Gimnasio
- Restaurantes, comercio…
- En resumen: todo lo necesario para lograr espacios perfectos para cada colectivo

Otro requisito será que estos colectivos deberán relacionarse entre ellos, ya sea en algún programa, o a una cierta hora…

Para el emplazamiento del proyecto se proponen varios solares de la zona, hasta hora ocupados por zonas verdes, así cada uno tendrá libertad de configurar su proyecto como mejor le parezca, en un solar en forma de edificio o intervenciones pequeñas en distintos solares. Cada uno decide que tamaño tiene su proyecto, según el espacio ideal de cada colectivo etc.

LEAVE STRESS BEHIND...

24 H RELAX CLUB - LEAVE STRESS BEHIND

Se trata de reactivar el Downtown de Manhattan proyectando un espacio de relajación para los trabajadores de la Zona Financiera, consiguiendo así que estos además de quedarse más tiempo en Manhattan antes de irse a sus casas consigan deshacerse del dichoso ESTRÉS que la ciudad y el trabajo les produce.

En un solar vacío situado junto a la Zona 0, a orillas del río Hudson con vistas espectaculares, propongo realizar este nuevo espacio cumpliendo el siguiente PROGRAMA:

- ZONA DE RELAJACIÓN FÍSICA: Balneario-Spa, aprovechando las vistas, con todo tipo circuitos y zonas de masajes.

- ZONA DE RELAJACIÓN MENTAL Y SENSORIAL: Mediante laberintos con salas de música y color se conseguiría captando el oído y la vista llegar a relajar a los visitantes.

- ZONA DE LECTURA Y BIBLIOTECA: El proyecto, también incorporará una pequeña biblioteca y una zona de lectura con sillones e iluminación adecuada para disfrutar de la lectura y relajarse.

- SIESTA - ROOM: Incorporar la idea de la siesta sería otra forma de conseguir la relajación de los trabajadores. Se trataría de una zona con diferentes unidades de ambiente cálido y acogedor, con vistas al río que se podrían alquilar durante el día para la SIESTA o por la noche como unidades de descanso para aves de paso en la ciudad.

- CHILL OUT CAFE: Por último, se incorporará al proyecto una cafetería CHILL OUT tipo Café del Mar en Ibiza, donde aprovechando las vistas y la maravillosa puesta de sol que se puede disfrutar (ORIENTACIÓN OESTE DEL SOLAR) se conseguiría un espacio más de relajación en grupo o individual.

Manhattan posee gran número de lugares “vacíos” sin edificar los cuales son lugares de oportunidad. Estos lugares el inconveniente que tienen es que durante una franja horaria determinada tienen un programa que realizar mientras que durante la otra están completamente desactivados.
PROPUESTA
Un edificio Hibrido que pueda compaginar el programa que activaría manhattan durante la noche con el programa usado durante el día.
LOCALIZACION.
Parque City Hall

En el plano se muestra por un lado la zona metropolitana en desuso nocturno
Y por otro el city hall park lugar de asentamiento de proyecto.
PROGRAMA
En cuanto al programa nos encontramos con tres tipos de programa que deben funcionar, tanto independientemente como en conjunto:

TRES TIPOS DE PROGRAMA:
PROGRAMA 1/programa del edificio:
El edificio estará relacionado con programa ocio que funcionará en la franja horaria de 00:00 a 07:00. En este caso se efectuarán los programas de:
-Auditorio/sala de conciertos/espacio para fiestas en un espacio no menor a 150m^2
-Sala de exposiciones temporales no menos de 70m^2
-Cafetería/bar/restaurante/garito no menos de 50m^2
PROGRAMA 2/programa del parque:

Propongo implantar una Plaza de Toros y un Recorrido para Encierros en Manhattan.

El espacio para situar la plaza está en el cruce de las calles West Street con Murray Street.

Tanto la plaza como el recorrido tienen un uso ocasional, así que habría que dotarlos para que cualquier otro tipo de espectáculo se pueda celebrar.

Como es probable que el evento taurino tuviera detractores, dispondremos una zona para manifestaciones, de forma que eso fuera parte también del show.

Nevertheless, I will be on-line most of the day, and if BEFORE 16:30 you send me an e-mail with a pdf of your work (keep it small, please, no bigger than 3 Mb per mail) I will get back to you during the afternoon.

Otherwise, as agreed, the deadline for this exercise is Thursday the 10th of January at 16:00.

Format:
- A1 panels in any number you think fitting, minimum three. Print in the highest possible quality. Use a light-semirigid base, minimum a 300gr paper, maximum a 5mm foam board.
- a disk with the panels in pdf and any relevant digital document (video, etc)

It is a good idea to include a first panel with research, first concepts, etc.

It is important to cover a wide range of scales, from the site plan to the microscale, but remember that if you have a large site, you don't have to define the whole thing down to the detail; make zooms of higher definition parts, keep larger scales schematic but eloquent.

If you do a model, remember that it is usually better to chose few good photos, manipulate and adjust them, and print them as large as they will stand. Chose meaningful photos that tell us something about your project. Even if you make seven hundred beautiful photos, choose a few and print them BIG.

Microscale

We are now doing a two week exercise, dealing with the smallest possible scale within your project.
You have to zoom in, and develop a small element of your project.
The choice will depend on the nature of your project. Today we have seen and decided some examples:

- Small public toilets in the park.
- A LED screen.
- A bench / cum roof-beam
- A lantern on the square.
- The DJ box.

It is desirable to choose or include something to sit on.
It is best to choose an autonomous element, preferably in the open air, or within a much larger space.

Make sure you tackle the materiality of your design; is it soft/hard/rough/heavy/light/shiny; include the users in your drawings; use a variety of tools/software: cad for precision, illustrator for clarity, models and photoshop for texture and feeling.

Next Thursday, you will join workshop T-41 in room 222, same schedule. It will be an in-house working session, so bring your materials (laptop, modelmaking gear, whatever you want to work with). You will be able to see how the fourth year students are dealing with microscale, and profs JLE Penelas and M Fonseca will provide feed-back (thanx!)

PROPOSAL

- Systems of housing/commerce/business more economic than the existing ones.

- Linear grouping along a N-S axis on the island border, especially on the West coast (a line permits continuity)

- Possibility of a pseudo reticulated intra-island enlargement whenever lots are available or the existing buildings are adapted.

- The search of a multi-directional dialogue among architecture, individual and city (the breaking of the limit through a space-programmatic continuity)

- Typology is considered a connection with city facilities (street, tram, bus, taxi, wifi, heating …)

- Recuperate the idea of “street” and “square” as public places of human scale and permanent activation with spatial-temporal programmes.

- The creation of new typology: elevated squares, parks and streets, which can break the hieratic reticle of Manhattan implying a capacity of programmatical association among architectures, and an economy contrasted with the present situation ( the breaking of the introversion of the skyscraper)

- Optimize the relationship between architecture – environment to reduce energy consumption with the resulting economy it would imply. We could thus optimize the layout of any piece according to sunlight and vary their distance without modifying the city density (thanks to increasing the section uses in the new elevated streets and squares)

- Programmatical versatility planning a transformable, tuneable structure (giving the building a personality) and capable of associating on demand (apartment, loft, studio flat, work-shop, office…) Thus the permanent future activation of the area according to the city needs is guaranteed. The architecture as a dynamic element that adapts to the city and transforms it.

- The solving of speed intersection conflicts by means of stratification, achieving a spatial-temporal co-existence and the optimization of itinerary (contraction of the urban distortion net) Such stratification will never imply a disconnection among activities.

- Visual connection among levels and the layout of a series of spatial association elements (ramps, escalators, elevators, stairs…) which will induce to a spatial connection between layers and activities.

- The structure planned will enable a spatial continuity (vertical inside the buildings and horizontal between them) in levels of equivalent privacy (vertical privacy gradient) or equivalent/compatible programs (The breaking with the idea of containers of piled-up, independent boxes whenever it is possible)

Tras analizar las diferentes estructuras de propiedad del Downtown de Manhattan y analizar las oportunidades de proyecto he pensado en generar una nueva estructura de propiedad que será un HIBRIDO de todas las estudiadas y a la que he denominado PROPERTYBOX. Así, se tratará de una estructura de propiedad a modo de caja que en su interior albergará diferentes topologías de propiedad segun el modelo familiar (familias, parejas, mayores, individuos de paso o de residencia temporal...) y cada uno de ellos seguirán las características de la estructura que más les convenga. Es simplemente un modelo que nos puede llevar a muchas soluciones diferentes de generar edificios de viviendas tan necesarios en el Downtown por la demanda que hay y la escasísisma oferta que existe.

Se trata de localizar y actuar sobre los grandes centros de aparcamiento situados en el downtown, y rehabilitar esos espacios a menudo espacios degradados pero con una gran afluencia de personas, y darles un programa de ocio. Tiendas, restaurantes, bares, exposiciones, etc., además de darles zonas de uso público (plantas bajas y azoteas) para otras actividades como cantantes callejeros, exposiciones y zonas de descanso. Pero manteniendo el espacio de aparcamiento, con otros sistemas para no reducir las plazas de aparcamiento que quitamos para meter los nuevos espacios de ocio.

Despues de haber hecho un estudio al transporte publico mas utilizado en manhattan (subway).Hemos descubierto que existe una relacion entre lo que sucede arriba y abajo,esa relacion la podriamos llamar caos, caos de diferentes tipos de redes (viarias,flujos de gente,...)tambien hemos encontrado estaciones degradadas por su uso y por el paso de los años. Por todo ello pretendo seguir una linea de accion entre lo virtual y lo real. De esta forma, crear espacios intermedios que sirvan de union de estas redes y no de cruce. Puntos de encuentro y no de paso. Reactivar las relaciones humanas en estos espacios ya existentes. Hablamos de actualizar,reciclar y en definitiva, crear espacios que fomenten la interactuacion entre los propios usuarios.

What, how, where, when

After studying the Downtown area we have found that one of the main problems is the lack of space and the poor activities for children. We have decided to act in two ways: first, with hybrid family buildings. These will have common spaces for kids available all the year round.
The other way will consist in parasitize some spaces of the area to include other activities that don’t take place in the building and at the same time completes the neighbour’s life.
This second action will connect with the first one.
Small communities will be formed for the families of a same building and at the same time this communities will be interconnect using as link the zones of activity.

This workshop is a part of the Downtown 2010 - Manhattan research project, run by Downtown Alliance, Laureate International Universities and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya; it is a part of Phase 1, as in the following framework:

A major challenge that downtown New York is facing in order to continue attracting residents and businesses is to reverse the lack of vitality during the late hours of the day and the weekends.

Downtown New York is the historical financial heart of Manhattan, and its geographic characteristics provide the potential of becoming a dynamic center of life in New York City. The history behind some of the buildings, the waterfront, and the particular urban layout are some of the factors that can be intensified to reach the final goal.

The goal of Downtown 2010 is to inspire committed action towards the vision of generating a true transformation of the downtown that enriches the life of New Yorkers and the urbanism for the generations to come.

An international competition is targeted as the best way to make this vision a reality. The final results would be the creation of powerful and homogeneous vitality during all hours of the day, week and year, extracting all the potential offered by the district.

As any type of transformation in the urbanism of a city, it is required the support of the Population and Private and Public institutions. In order to reach to all of these layers of the society, the process will be divided in three phases:

Phase 1: Exposition about Strategic proposals coming from Outstanding International Universities. The main goal is to generate discussion and momentum in the media and the citizenship. This momentum will help to get economical and political support from public and private organizations. The proposals should be based on creativity, relationship with the economical factors, recommendations from the Downtown Alliance and comments from other possible developers involved.

Phase 2: Creation of a multidisciplinary committee, including the organizations involved in Phase 1 and incorporating other public institutions, art centers and Developers. The committee will generate a realistic and attractive scope for the competition basing it on the feedback obtained from Phase 1.

Phase 3: International Competition. The proposal should create a minor impact on the current buildings and functions of the district, but should provide a huge added value.

This workshop is a part of the sharing space research project, run by carlos arroyo. A variety of environments have been studied so far, including Madrid, Tokio, Bogota and Vienna, through a series of workshops and courses.

Informing our study of URBAN STRUCTURE AND WAYS OF LIFE we may define a privacy gradient to frame the infinite intermediate situations between public and private.
Between the public square and the bedroom, there is a whole array of examples that question the traditional divide, the black and white conception of public and private.

Public square – temporarily privatized public space with no contract – benches on the street – licensed occupation – open-air cafés – kiosks – advertising – privately-owned public access space – shopping centres with piazzas and streets – the tube – accessible spaces with admission reserves – open shops – self-service – closed shops – shops with a bell – public buildings and services – libraries – publicly-owned restricted access space – pay-to-enter accessible space – residences – urban communities – gated communities with shops and services – co-ownership – shared systems – shared leisure – swimming-pools – tennis – crèche – portal – media – virtual space – shared flats– grouped units – clans– families – friends – symbiosis – internet – wikipaedias – from the bedroom to cyberspace and back again.

This spectrum of intermediate situations covers almost everything, and yet, it is little studied. We still operate under the false impression of the radical separation between private and public.
The aim of this exercise is to verbalise, visualise, get to know these places as they are now, and to create a set of tools to control and design shared space in future projects.
